Overview

Rome kept its dead outside the walls, and the result is a honeycomb of burial tunnels cut into soft tufa rock. With a guide you walk a lit section of one of the great catacomb complexes on the Appian Way, reading the earliest Christian symbols scratched into stone. Back at street level you visit a decorated crypt in the centre — a very different kind of memorial — and hear how both were rediscovered.
