Overview

Pompeii is not a ruin in the usual sense — it is a town that stopped. You travel down by high-speed train, meet a local archaeologist and spend around three hours inside the excavations: the forum, a bakery with its millstones still standing, painted dining rooms, the brothel, the baths, the wheel-rutted streets. Vesuvius stays in view the whole time, which is the point. You are back in Rome by evening.
