Overview

Tivoli sits in the hills east of Rome and holds two very different masterpieces. Villa d'Este is a sixteenth-century garden engineered entirely around gravity — hundreds of fountains, no pumps. Hadrian's Villa, lower down, is what an emperor built when he wanted a whole landscape of pools, libraries and theatres to himself. With a guide and comfortable transport, both fit into one unhurried day.
